What began as a grassroots passion project has grown into Raleigh’s bid to land a Major League Baseball team — with billionaire Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon now behind the push. Supporters point to Raleigh’s fast-growing population, vibrant minor league fanbase, and favorable media market, but experts say it still faces steep challenges.

A lack of Fortune 500 headquarters, no stadium plan, and strong competition from cities like Nashville, widely seen as the frontrunner, are major hurdles. Dundon has the financial clout, but without a concrete stadium proposal or broader public investment, Raleigh remains an underdog. Still, some believe the city has the potential and community support to pull off what other long shots once did.

Raleigh has officially scrapped its $93 million plan to widen Six Forks Road, a major blow to business leaders and residents in the growing North Hills area. The city had already spent $9 million on planning before the project was killed due to surging construction costs.

Emile Hartman of the Midtown Raleigh Alliance called the decision “disheartening” after more than a decade of planning and advocacy. Supporters argue the project was essential to reduce traffic congestion and support continued growth in Midtown. For now, the city plans to redirect the funds toward smaller-scale projects, but there’s no path forward for Six Forks — and leaders warn that waiting longer will only make future fixes more expensive.

Downtown Raleigh’s Fayetteville Street is getting a fast-casual Italian upgrade this fall with the arrival of Veloce Italian Market. Restaurateur Anthony Rapillo — the mind behind V Pizza and Flour and Barrel — is opening the 1,000-square-foot spot in the former Happy + Hale space at City Plaza.

Veloce, meaning “fast” in Italian, will focus on 90-second Neapolitan pizzas, sandwiches, wings, and to-go Italian market items. Rapillo says the concept fills a gap in the downtown dining scene and reflects the street’s resurgence after a slow few years. A speakeasy across the street is also in the works, with a third secretive project planned nearby.

A new kind of taproom is headed to northeast Raleigh this August with the opening of Another Round Disc Golf. The Charlotte-based concept will combine a disc golf retail shop with a craft beer bar at 5540 Atlantic Springs Road, near the Cedar Hills Park disc golf course.

The 1,600-square-foot space will offer local brews on tap, gear and apparel, and even a disc golf simulator for throwing practice and virtual play. Franchisee Bradley Bushman, a longtime disc golf enthusiast, is investing around $125,000 into the venture. He hopes the shop will become a go-to spot for Raleigh’s growing disc golf community.
