STORIES THIS WEEK

Indoor Golf Venue Tees Off in North Raleigh 🏌️‍♀️

A new indoor golf experience is coming to Falls River Town Center this winter with the opening of Back Nine Golf. Local franchisee Joseph Gendy is bringing the Utah-based brand to a 3,400-square-foot space at 1141 Falls River Ave., outfitted with four high-tech Full Swing simulators.

The venue will be open 24/7 for members, offering flexible tee times any time of day or night. Guests can bring their own food and drinks, and one bay will feature a private space for those seeking a more exclusive experience. If successful, Gendy hopes to expand with additional Raleigh-area locations in the future.

Longleaf Swine Expands to North Raleigh 🐷

Longleaf Swine, a downtown Raleigh barbecue favorite, is cooking up a second location in Greystone Village, taking over the former Sawmill Tap Room space. Co-owner Adam Cunningham says the team is aiming for a fall 2026 opening.

The move adds to Raleigh’s growing barbecue scene, which has seen an influx of new spots in recent years alongside classics like Clyde Cooper’s and Ole Time Barbecue. Longleaf’s original location opened in late 2022 in the old Oakwood Cafe space after years of delays. With the new expansion, Raleigh’s barbecue boom shows no signs of slowing down.

Rezoning Sought for More Student Housing Near N.C. State 🏘️

A new rezoning request could pave the way for more student housing just south of N.C. State University’s Centennial Campus. The application covers 17 parcels along Avent Ferry Road, Broadwell Drive, and Chappell Drive, totaling nearly 9 acres. Current plans call for rezoning the land to allow up to four stories of residential mixed-use, replacing 59 older rental units built in the 1950s and ’60s.

With N.C. State’s enrollment now nearing 40,000 — including 28,000 undergraduates — demand for housing has surged, fueling projects like the 2,000-bed Hub on Campus on Hillsborough Street. If approved, the redevelopment would add walkable, bikeable housing close to campus and major bus routes.

MLB to Raleigh? Momentum Builds Around Expansion and Stadium Plans ⚾️

The movement to bring Major League Baseball to Raleigh continues to pick up steam, led by Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon and supported by grassroots group MLB Raleigh. Potential stadium sites have been discussed, with cost estimates ranging from $1–2 billion.

Like most major sports venues, some level of public funding will almost certainly be part of the project, though details have not yet been shared. Supporters see the investment as a way to boost civic pride, attract tourism, and strengthen Raleigh’s national profile. If successful, an MLB franchise could mark one of the most significant milestones in the city’s growth.

Fast-growing Tex-Mex chain Mezcalito is opening its first Raleigh location at 1000 Social in The Exchange Raleigh, off St. Albans Drive (North Hills area). The 6,400-square-foot restaurant is expected to open early next year, led by owner Jose Jimenez, who grew up in Raleigh.

Guests can expect fajitas, burritos, tacos, seafood, and signature dishes like agave chipotle ribs, plus a full lineup of tequila, mezcal, and rum cocktails — including giant 40-ounce drinks. This flagship spot is designed to stand out with bold flavors and vibrant décor that match The Exchange’s upscale atmosphere. Mezcalito already has six locations across North Carolina and is continuing its rapid expansion in the Triangle.
