Crabtree Valley Mall, one of Raleigh’s most valuable retail properties, has been acquired by The Macerich Company for $290 million. The California-based real estate firm plans to invest $60 million in renovations between 2025 and 2028, aiming to boost leasing and revitalize the mall's atmosphere.
With over 200 stores, the mall draws 8.7 million visitors annually and generates $429 million in sales. Previously owned by an Abu Dhabi-based group, the 1.3 million-square-foot property sits just outside the Beltline and is currently 94% occupied. This deal marks another major shift in Raleigh’s retail landscape following the recent sale of Triangle Town Center.
Uptown Cheapskate, a national secondhand apparel chain known for stylish, affordable fashion, is opening a new location in North Raleigh. The store will be located in the former Ahri’s restaurant space at Falls Village shopping center off Falls of Neuse Road, across from North Ridge Country Club. This will be the brand’s fourth Triangle-area store, joining others in Raleigh near NC State, Apex, and Durham.
The $222,000 buildout is currently underway, with permits filed by Julia Romanus and Craig Dean. Uptown Cheapskate allows customers to sell their clothes for cash or store credit, making it a popular choice for fashion-conscious shoppers looking to save or earn.
Construction tech firm BuildOps has chosen Raleigh over Austin, Texas, to establish a new technology hub that will bring 291 high-paying jobs to the area. After evaluating 10 locations, the company selected Raleigh for its talent pool, affordability, and connectivity.
With average salaries near $111,000, the move is backed by nearly $2.9 million in combined state and city incentives. BuildOps has already begun testing local hires and recently raised $50 million in funding, signaling major growth. The announcement adds to a surge of economic development activity across North Carolina.
Harris Teeter will close its Western Boulevard location in Raleigh by July 20 as part of parent company Kroger’s effort to eliminate underperforming stores. The closure comes after nearly 40 years of serving the neighborhood and is part of a broader "strategic market review" that includes multiple store closures.
Employees will be offered transfers to other locations, and Harris Teeter continues to invest in the region with a new store recently opened in Apex. Despite this closure, the chain remains a major player in the Raleigh grocery market with 11 area locations and strong market share.

US-70 (Glenwood Ave) looking west with Angus Barn on the left. July 1967.
NCDOT recently finished constructing the median crossover shown here, designed to enhance safety for westbound drivers exiting Angus Barn.
In June 1960, Charles Winston, Sr. and Thad Eure, Jr. launched the restaurant in a spot far beyond Raleigh’s city limits, deep in what was then countryside. Many skeptics questioned whether it could thrive in such a remote location. Yet, over the years, Angus Barn defied expectations, flourishing into the iconic Raleigh restaurant it is today.
