STORIES THIS WEEK

Millions Needed to Keep RDU’s Runway Alive 🛫

Raleigh-Durham International Airport is pouring millions into repairs to keep its aging main runway operational until a new one opens in 2029. Since 2019, crews have replaced 350 slabs of asphalt, but engineers say deeper rehabilitation is needed as the pavement’s “core” continues to weaken.

RDU construction

The airport authority recently approved $1.5 million for additional fixes, including work on the Terminal 1 apron, which has reached the end of its useful life. Overall, officials estimate another $30 million will be required to sustain the runway, plus $10 million for apron repairs. Meanwhile, RDU’s new runway project, originally budgeted at $534 million but now projected at $1.1 billion, is underway, with full completion not expected until 2035.

Angus Barn’s Holiday Magic Returns 🥩

Christmas comes early at Raleigh’s Angus Barn, where holiday decorations are already being installed to transform the landmark restaurant into a festive destination. The process is so elaborate it takes weeks to complete, inspired by the grandeur of places like the Biltmore Estate and the Greenbriar Resort.

Reservations open 120 days in advance and are often gone within 15 seconds — “kind of like Taylor Swift tickets,” joked Manager Jill Highsmith. This year’s decorations will be finished by November 14 and stay up through January 25, making the Barn one of Raleigh’s most sought-after dining experiences of the season. A handful of November and January reservations are still available, but December is already packed.

Hulu Backs Out of Bill Belichick UNC Documentary 🎥

A planned five-episode Hulu series on Bill Belichick’s coaching stint at UNC-Chapel Hill is now in doubt after the streaming service reportedly pulled out of the project. Public records show the series was pitched as a candid look at Belichick’s “awesomely interesting” daily life, with UNC set to receive $250,000 for access.

Filming began in August, with producers hoping to capture everything from early-morning routines to late-night work and even cafeteria meals. But reports say Hulu soured on the project after Belichick resisted sharing personal details with fans, leaving the status of the show uncertain. The withdrawal comes as Belichick faces scrutiny over UNC’s struggles on the field.

Whataburger Expands Into the Triangle 🍔

Whataburger is moving closer to opening its first locations in the Triangle. The Texas-based burger chain is planning a restaurant at 79 Inspiration Drive in Garner and is actively building on Six Forks Road in Raleigh, with another site coming to Falls of Neuse Road. While the company hasn’t announced an opening date, it is hiring operating partners with six-figure earning potential.

Six Forks location under construction

The Garner location sits just off Highway 42 next to Wawa, while in Raleigh, crews have demolished the former Applebee’s and framed a new building. Whataburger has said its Raleigh locations are expected to open in 2026 as the chain continues its rapid North Carolina growth.
